It’s summer time and you’ll be needing some nice music to have in the headphones for those lazy days on the sun lounger, baking on the beach or waiting wearily at the airport, won’t you? Never fear, Mister Fusty is here and he’s desperate to sell some albums a generous fellow and all three Mister Fusty albums are on sale for only £1 (that’s about $1.49 and €1.22 at the time of writing) and the Sprung EP is FREE. Not bad eh? If you’ve never heard much Fusty music before now is a good time to have a listen. The latest EP, “Connect” is still a reasonable £2.50 (It is for charity, come on).

UPDATE: The summer sale will end 1st August, earlier than expected, as Bandcamp will be taking percentage from then, which is fair enough. They have been offering the (excellent) services for free up until now.

My wife took part in the Race for Life (a charity fun run in aid of Cancer Research) last year and hopes to do so this year. She is always looking for sponsors, so I decided that this EP would sponsor her and hopefully raise money for a good cause. I also chose an international charity (WSPA) too to spilt the sales money between. Both are great causes, even if you hate the music please buy the EP! (It’s a bargain at only £2.50!)

Finally Mister Fusty’s music has made it to Spotify. If you don’t know what that is then basically it’s an excellent music streaming service starting from free (with adverts) to a monthly charge for premium (no adverts, mobile app etc.) Unfortunately it’s not available in all countries yet but hopefully it won’t be too long before it’s everywhere. You can now listen to Mister Fusty’s music on Spotify (except for the Sparkly Darkly album – no idea why) so click on the link to listen for free.

OTHER NEWS

I plan, hopefully, to release two EPs this year. The first, as yet untitled, EP will appear in June and all proceeds will go to charity. The second should arrive in the Autumn, I say should as I’ve not written or recorded the songs yet…

More details to come on the first EP soon.

Last year I collaborated on a track with John Lane from Expo on a track called “Fitness Suite”. He sent me a backing track and I warbled along, adding a bit of percussion, bass and other bits. Incredibly, he liked what I did and didn’t vow never to speak to me again for ruining his track.

Finally you can hear the fruits of our efforts at Expo’s Myspace site. The album, called “She Sells Seashells” is out in the summer NOW featuring collaborations with other artists. When it’s out I’ll let you know but until then listen to the track here.

Unfortunately no Stevie Wonder & Paul McCartney-style video is planned at the moment.

As a special gift from us here in Fusty’s Festive log cabin please accept this free mp3 of an alternative version of one of the tracks off the album “Over the Rocky Mountains”. It’s a remix of the opening track “Rocky”, a version similar to this was to be included on the album but I decided that it didn’t really belong. Hello there!

This is just a quick note to say you can now download the latest Mister Fusty opus, “Over the Rocky Mountains” from CD Baby here.  Hopefully early next year the album will be on Spotify, iTunes, emusic, lala and other wonderful online mp3 depots. You shall, no doubt, be cheerfully informed as it happens. There will also be more news to come next year from my label/collective Headphone Treats. Pugwash – “Giddy”

Strictly speaking it’s not a ‘new’ album, it’s a compilation of the best bits from their previous 4 albums, but as it was released this year and it’s the first time their music been released officially in the UK I’ve included them. Without doubt this has been the best thing I have heard all year and a major discovery for me. There’s been few occasions in 2009 where I’ve got an album and love it so much I can’t wait to get to the nearest stereo to hear it. I’m frightened of playing it too much in case I get sick of it! Influence-wise it pushes all my musical favourite buttons, The Beatles, ELO, XTC, High Llamas, are all clear influences in there without the band being  sound-alikes or derivative. I’m seriously thinking of giving up because I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write a song as good as “My Genius”. Pugwash are now signed to Andy Partridge’s Ape Label and all their previous Ireland-only released back catalogue , hopefully, will be re-released everywhere, so look out for them.

Bill Callahan – “Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle”

If it wasn’t for my recent Pugwash conversion I probably would’ve said this has been my favourite album of the year.  Although I’ve heard of Bill and his Smog moniker I’d never heard much of his music until I came across this. It was the opening track Jim Cain that drew me in, it was very reminiscent of Lambchop’s album Nixon, which I love. The closing track Faith/Void is one of the best songs I have heard all year and I’m totally behind it’s sentiment.

Richard Hawley – Truelove’s Gutter

Much as I’d liked his previous album, Lady’s Bridge, this was Richard doing what he does best, mining that rich seam of melancholy and melody he does so effortlessly. This is up there with his wonderful previous albums such as Late Night Final and Coles Corner. It’s takes a while to get into but once it has you – it never leaves you. Beautiful.

Super Furry Animals – Dark Days/Light Years

Never ones to make a bad or even weak album the Furries returned this year with a stormer. Perhaps it’s a little more experimental and strange than their previous (underrated IMO) album Hey Venus! but still packed with great tunes. One of the most consistantly great UK bands. Cherish them while they are still around!

The Cribs – “Ignore the Ignorant”

I’d never really took much notice of The Cribs until I got hold of a couple of their previous albums this year and was bowled over. I’d wrongly lumped them in with a number of so called ‘landfill indie’ bands but in fact found out they are really rather good indeed. Now, with the addition of the legendary guitarist Johnny Marr, their sound has more texture. Perhaps Johnny’s best collaboration since Electronic or, dare I say it with Morrissey in The Smiths?
